"The New York Times reported that Cannon presided over just 14 days of criminal trials as a judge before she was assigned this historic case involving a former president accused of espionage."
"A 2006 rule, intended to shine a light on judges’ attendance at paid seminars that could pose conflicts or influence decisions, requires them to file disclosure forms for such trips within 30 days and make them public on the court’s website.
It’s not the first time she has failed to fully comply with the rule."
"A group of Republicans have urged a Florida appeal court to remove Judge Aileen Cannon from Donald Trump's classified documents case.
They also called for the court to reinstate the case after Cannon dismissed all charges against the former president in July.
Cannon, a Trump appointee, dismissed all charges after ruling that prosecutor Jack Smith was wrongfully appointed as a special counsel to Trump's federal cases.
The Republican group's filing stated that Cannon committed "grave errors" and should be removed from the case."
"The May 5, 2023, event at George Mason University was held in honor of the late conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and included attendees from the conservative legal group the Federalist Society and right-leaning judges from across the country.
"South Florida district judge Aileen Cannon faced two blows within two weeks as Republicans and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) called for her removal from the classified documents case and a new report alleges she failed to disclose her attendance at paid seminars on three occasions.
Cannon received heavy backlash recently after some Republicans alleged that she mishandled former President Donald Trump's classified documents case and urged a Florida appeals court to remove her from the case.
The district judge dismissed the case in July, ruling that Special Counsel Jack Smith's appointment was unconstitutional.
In the amicus brieffiled by Republicans requesting Cannon's removal from the classified documents case in support of Smith, they alleged the judge made "grave errors" and urged the court to appeal its decision."
"The Trump-appointed judge who threw out the former president’s criminal classified documents case wasn’t up-front about her own conflicts, and now the details of her backroom liaisons are beginning to trickle out.
Judge Aileen Cannon failed to disclose that she attended a banquet at a conservative law school in May 2023 to honor the late conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, flouting a 2006 rule requiring judges to file formal disclosures when they attend seminars or conferences that could influence their decisions. But it’s not the only time that Cannon has failed to notify the public of her partisan behavior."
