In the Book of Revelation, John the Divine AKA John of Patmos, who may or may not have been an actual apostle explains quite clearly how most people will be judged. He tells us that everyone who has ever lived, with the exception of a few religious leaders, are still dead and in their graves, awaiting the Second Coming of Jesus. When Jesus arrives, all those who have ever lived since Genesis will get their bodies back and will be judged by Jesus.
This Final Judgement is part of the Nicene Creed..."I believe in the resurrection of souls". But wait! Preachers are always trying to tell their parishioners to be saved now, which will qualify them for Heaven prior to this Final Judgement.
The official view is that nearly everyone can only be saved at the Final Judgement by Jesus himself whenever he returns. In the first centuries, Paul and others thought that Jesus would return at any moment. Paul told people that there was no reason at all to marry or have children because Jesus' arrival was imminent: like next Tuesday or Friday at the latest. But as we know, Jesus has not returned and preachers are STILL claiming that at any moment the End Times will come and we will all be judged.
They invented The Rapture just to stir things up a bit, and many a sucker has swallowed it whole.
So, can you be saved HERE AND NOW and guaranteed Heaven, as preachers often claim? Or should we die and molder until the return of the King of Kings, who was never recognized by any monarch in his time?
More people seem to believe that when we die, our souls goes up to Heaven where it meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates and he, (not Jesus, mind you) decides whether to let us in. This is the view best expressed in several Loony Tunes cartoons as I recall.
