Small piece of recent news regards a story that some tungsten was found in some gold bars sold to China. Tungsten has almost the same specific gravity but, of course, isn't as expensive of a material. One of the ways to cheat a gold bullion customer has been to provide a bar that was gold on the outside and tungsten on the inside. There is a test that is often performed when custody transfers take place where a sample set are drilled and the innards tested for purity. According to the story, China got recently bit when they purchased a bunch of gold bars and then ran the required tests.
