Bone-chilling cold plods into Northeast US

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hoods were up and heads were down as a storm that plagued the Midwest for days plodded eastward Tuesday with knifing winds and blowing snow, stranding dozens of motorists on a southern Ontario highway and giving much of the northeastern U.S. its first real taste of winter.

The storm brought bone-chilling cold, and more snow was expected or already falling Tuesday in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. The frigid air stretched into the deep South, where hard freeze warnings were in effect overnight in much of Florida. Hundreds of schools were closed or opening late.

It’s not just the manatees.
The record freeze in the southern US is killing the sea turtle babies, too.

Scientists are having to transport the eggs to save the endangered sea turtle babies from the record cold.

For each day’s arrangements of high pressure, low pressure, wind speed and the like, they looked for similar days at similar times of year in records stretching back to 1948. In general, cold winter days in 2010 turned out to be less cold than equivalent days in earlier years had been.

Overall, judging by pressures and winds, 2009-10 should have been as cold as 1963, the coldest winter in the records analysed, with temperatures on average 4°C lower than normal. Instead it was the 13th coldest winter with an average temperature just 1.3°C below normal. Britons put out by the current bout of cold weather will get little satisfaction from the thought that it could have been worse. But it used to be.

Specialized or not is moot if the data is crap. Polar water probably warmed up a bit as a result of the underwater volcanos going off ya think ?

they must have hatched way late if they are still small, they're usually popping out in August or September.

polar bear populations are thriving.
