Somehow I don't think these ex-burglars meant it would be safer for the public.

Ex-Burglars Say Newspaper’s Gun Map Would’ve Made the Job Easier, Safer

Newspaper sparks outrage over gun owner map

Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – to their old cronies in the burglary trade.

The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

"Having a list of who has a gun is like gold - why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?” - Walter T. Shaw, former burglar and jewel thief

“That was the most asinine article I’ve ever seen,” said Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted some $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s. “Having a list of who has a gun is like gold - why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?

"What they did was insanity," added Shaw, author of "License to Steal," a book about his criminal career.

The newspaper published the online map last month alongside an article titled, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood." The map included the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

While the paper ostensibly sought to make a point about gun proliferation in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the effort backfired. A blogger reacted with a map showing where key editorial staffers live and some outraged groups have called for a boycott of parent company Gannett’s national advertisers. Ironically, the newspaper has now stationed armed guards outside at least one of its offices.

“They just created an opportunity for some crimes to be committed and I think it’s exceptionally stupid,” said Bob Portenier, 65, a former burglar and armed house robber turned crime prevention consultant.

the danger of a free press, I suppose, is that they are not bound by anything as to what is worthy for publication. with the exception of their conscience... if they have one.

are these the same guys who had their addresses published ?

seems like the karma is probably not going to equal out in this case.

They printed Judge Pirro's name and address too. She was a district attorney in NY and put away a lot of bad guys. She is really angry about this. This radical left-nut paper hasn't printed the names and addresses of pedophiles and criminals, but sees fit to broadcast the names/addresses of law abiding citizens and first responders.

They also like to print unsubstantiated stories about conservatives, using un-named sources. Funny how their first amendment rights trample all over the right to privacy.

wait up... is this NYT ? what rag doesnt publish the dubious crap that attempts to denigrate the right ? the ap wire feeds it to all.

The founders knew the press was not trustworthy (this is nothing new) but if the govt doesnt censor any faction then that allowed the marketplace to teward the truth.

Perhaps people are focusing on the wrong issue. if the 2nd days shall not be infringed then why is congress even keeping records ?

Free speech is ugly.

Really? Maybe the paper didn't NEED to print the name AND ADDRESS of pedophiles, because these are READILY AVAILABLE for all to see, any time they choose!

Here is an example of one of the county in the general area where I live:

http://www.columbiacountyga.gov/index.aspx?page=2391

Please note that NONE Of these people have KILLED. . .they are sex offenders. . .not all pedophiles either. In fact, some are listed in this way for having been in possession of pornographic material!

If I was the Governor id order All Law Enfircement officers do not enforce,,Speeding,Traffic violations or even Parking violations and start patroling the neighborhoods. If a black guy is wondering around pull car over confront him and question him. Or Put cuffs on him to scare him makje sure he belongs in this neighborhood. Thats how you relalate against the paper.

they would get in hot water over last part but might as well drop everyything to patrol more gun free areas.
or not.

Well if public supports it how can they be in hot water? It would be the Cheif who would be in hot water cause you would have protests if they fire cops for that.

Wow.

It took the usual liberals only five posts to equate law-abiding gun owners with pedophiles and sex offenders.

Is this a record?

Law abiding gun owners have a tendency at times to become killers.
And unfortunately, when they do, the victim is DEAD. . .and no amount of therapy will save his/her life.

But the ONLY reason I brought in this "false equivalency" is because YOU had brought it up in your own post:

This radical left-nut paper hasn't printed the names and addresses of pedophiles and criminals, but sees fit to broadcast the names/addresses of law abiding citizens and first responders.

Obviously I do not believe that the majority of gun owner will turn into murderers, but whether you like it or not, the possibility greatly increases as soon as they purchase a gun. . .or they wouldn't need to purchase a gun!

And, it would seem that, logically, the people who should complain about the address of gun owners being published anywhere should be those among us WHO CHOOSE NOT TO OWN A GUN, as it is obvious that, IF people choose to purchase a gun as a DETERRENT to home invasion, they would be proud of DISPLAYING A SIGN on their front door stating that they have a gun (not unlike the people who have a security alarm installed in their home like to display a sign stating that the home is protected by such a security alarm system!)!

Unless, of course, some gun owners feel that it is a lot more fun to "use that gun and shoot an intruder" than to simply DETER an intruder from attempting to enter!

Law abiding gun owners have a tendency at times to become killers.

Law abiding homeowners have a tendency at times to become killers.....therefore ban/heavily regulate homeownership.
Law abiding car owners have a tendency at times to become killers.....therefore ban/heavily regulate car ownership.
Law abiding pet owners have a tendency at times to become killers.....therefore ban/heavily regulate pet ownership.
Law abiding employed persons have a tendency at times to become killers....therefore ban/heavily regulate employment.

Things should not be banned simply because some arbitrary set of the population might at an arbitrary date in the future do something with bad with it.

And could you please point out where I advocated for banning hand guns?
Yes, I admitted that I would prefer if all guns would disappear. . .and also stated that I obviously knew that it was not an option. I also very clearly expressed that I believed a STRENGTHENING of gun laws NOT A BANNING OF ALL WEAPONS would be useful in curbing the violence and the killing of innocents (and, in "innocents" I do include "home intruders who would attempt to steal merely material objects" as I do not believe that ANY material object is worth the life of a person).

We all know why COPS carry guns! And Some of them are Law abiding citizens.

What a great resource for burglars and home invasion robbers! Look, here are the homes that have guns. You want to stay away from there and go elsewhere. I'm sure that they appreciated the thought.

What else could they do to support their local criminals? Maybe, keep track of the cops and post a map of where they're likely to be at any given time, that would help them conduct their "business" without getting caught.

Thats why you need cops enforcing REAL CRIME! not petty traffic violations or parking violations. All petty stuff is for making money for local government. When you focus on burglars and people just wondering around your neighborhood you cut down crime. Look at camerias to in 7-11 stores and in Wal-Mart. It cuts down criminal activity.
