The popular vote doesn't count in presidential elections, and is soon forgotten anyway. Now, if the electoral votes were to be awarded proportionally, then everyone's vote would count. If, for example, the vote in California were 60% Obama, and Obama therefore were awarded 60% of those 55 electoral votes, then the popular vote would be very important. The downside to that would be that we'd be subject to the same inane campaign ads that people in the "swing" states have to suffer through.
