From the perspective of a person who grew up in poverty, I do not support this drain on the Federal budget. However, if it can be shown that starving people will crawl into an art exhibit to view the paintings as they starve to death, I will reconsider my opinion. The money would be better spent to mitigate the plight of the poor. If the pretentious rich wish to encourage the creation of "art", they should do so with their own money rather than use tax money.

Good point.

And even though this cause is usually more championed by the Left I do agree with you... especially in tough economic times.

Donating to the Arts really does seem to me more appropriate to me when it's private donations from people who really engage in the Arts or collect art or want to leave a personal endowment to the Arts.

I'm fine with special personal tax right offs for donating to the Arts just like in any charity type situation... but it's not a real high priority thing to me when it's coming straight out of the US budget.
