Chinese chided for putting mother before motherland

Gold medallist Zhou Yang of China poses with her medal during the medal ceremony for the women's 1500 metres short track speed skating competition at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, February 21, 2010.

Olympic champion short track speedskater Zhou Yang has been chided by China's deputy sports minister for thanking her parents but not her country after winning gold at the Vancouver Games last month.

Who should athletes appreciate on winning the award first of all, mother or the motherland?

They should thank God, which probably wouldn't go over any better with the ChiComs than thanking her mother. However, given that she is a woman and wasn't aborted in favor of a male child, perhaps the powers that be shouldn't be so hard on her--she owes her mother a lot. God bless Zhou Yang and her family. Perhaps someday China will have more enlightened leadership that will realize that strong families lead to a strong, prosperous, and stable society. Something the state should appreciate and not be jealous of.

God knows we've forgotten that in the US. Peace.
