We need many, many, many more like this

Cut out all education, ignorant people are much easier to control. The Catholic church understood this and that's why they didn't want the Bible put out in a form that the lay person could own and read.

With a less than 50% success rate, a cabal of indifferent union controlled teachers appear to have "cut out (damn near) all education" quite nicely on their own accord.

You can bet this Rhode Island community is not an isolated case.

Unless I am misinterpreting your comment, apparently, for you and a few others, it's too much to ask for a better than 50% success rate from ones tax dollar.

Sounds like you are one of those who believes that every teacher is a good teacher, and they deserve every penny they get irregardless if the child learns, or not. And it just has to be the students fault, or the parents, or the community at large. Couldn't be the over paid teachers who feel that they can do whatever they want.

Homeschooling would save a lot of money, as would charter schools, and vouchers.

If you feel that teachers are over paid, it is not too late for you to become a teacher. I was over 40 when I became one. I found out that teachers are virtually powerless. And that it is the attitude of the parents and their students that determine if the student is going to learn or not.
The teachers are afraid of the principal, the principal is afraid of the superintendent, the superintendent is afraid of the school board, the school board is afraid of the parents, and the students are not afraid of anyone, especially a teacher.
Become a teacher if you wish to leave your dream world behind and have a rude awakening about what has happened to the state of education.

The word you are looking for is "regardless". There is no such word as, "irregardless".

If a student is provided with a text book, then there can be no excuse for not learning. No matter how bad the teacher was, a teacher cannot stop a motivated student from learning. I had such experiences in college. I had some of the best instructors and some of the very worst. It did not matter; I was so motivated as to be desperate to do well. If the requirment was four pages, I turned in six or more... I received the Trade Technical Education Award for my graduation year. Despite the some very bad instructors, I graduated with a 3.97 GPA.
By the way, I am in favor of, "Home schooling would save a lot of money, as would charter schools...". With the state of public schools, they are a much better alternative to the zoos filled with vermin that are our public schools.

How is it that conservatives can rationalize the bankers and business men have "worked for", or "earned" their income, but teachers have not?

That's easy. Because most bankers and business men get fired for failure and ALL g-school teachers do not. Plus, most bankers and business men do not belong to a socialistic union and ALL g-school teachers do. The consequences of this are the dumbing down of American and brainwashing of our children with DF liberal ideas.

Do I win a prize?:D

Some are overpaid, some are not but the point I think of the story is...

when asked to sacrifice just a bit, they flat refused. The whole of the private sector is suffering, losing jobs, getting pay cuts, getting hours cut. Public sector people should not be above the sacrifice

How is it that progressives / liberals / leftists can endlessly asssociate themselves with victimization, correcting the natural unfairness of life, and class warfare... with zero concepts of the economic realities of attaining and sustaining their mythical nirvana?:)

If you head was not up... you would be aware of the recent history of bankers "failing" but keeping their jobs and still getting their bonuses.

How is it that Union led teachers are completely ineffective at teaching but still have the ability of, "...dumbing down of American and brainwashing of our children with DF liberal ideas..."?
It is still not too late for you to become a teacher and be part of the solution. Or, you can continue to shoot your mouth off on this forum with things you know nothing about.

That may have been the point of the "story", but the pertinent question is: How many idiotic requests came from that administrator before that one? How many teachers are going to agree to tutor if no students show up to be tutored. Why would they...they are content to fail. You have not lived through all this bull..... I have. I could give you many, many, many actual examples, but none would affect you. Become a G. D. teacher and see what is going on instead of shooting your mouth off. The pay is great!

Let's all take after the private non unionised sector and piss trillions of dollars away so that we can destroy America.

Yeeha

No, let's unionize every private industry and demand union wages and benefits so that we can all destroy America together. I would be interested to see how quickly the absolute inability to compete with the rest of the world would shutter doors, and leave millions more unemployed.

Government has provided ample legislation to protect from unseemly labor practices that brought about unions in the first place. With this in mind, can you explain the need for protection from the very entities that institute laws and regulations to protect employee's?

The sole reasons for all modern unions, government and corporate, are to collectively extort endless, unsustainable wage and benefit increases, eliminate risks of being fired for incompetance, and to collect dues...tens of millions of which are used to influence elections and policy that favor unions.

Yeeha!
