Too far left or right?

If given the choice, would you prefer to:
1). be ignored by your government and left to fend for yourselves, but have the freedoms and privacy that would go along with being ignored.

2). To be very well taken care of and have all your needs met by the government, but lose almost all of your freedom and privacy

Until I was reading up on the possible candidates in this upcoming election I thought I knew which one i preferred. In light of everything thats going on here, I'm not sure what i would prefer at all.

I used to want the government to take care of its people. That means food, water, shelter, protection, whatever anyone needed. My heart bled every time I saw someone who needed more help than I could give them. But now that I see exactly what it means to have the government so far up your arse that you have no privacy, no freedom, nothing... I'm changing my tune. I want the government to worry about protecting us, and otherwise get the hell out of my arse!

I prefer the government return to the enumerred role given it by we the people.
