The phrase Lunatic Fringe was coined by President Teddy Roosevelt to describe the wingnuts of his day including the one who assassinated his predecessor President William McKinley. They are the unhinged and unpatriotic citizens who don't appreciate the American way of settling political differences through elections and personal differences through he courts.
They are anarchists who appoint themselves as the law and judge instead of the people's duly elected lawmakers and judges. They flip out, go berserk, look under their bed, and wet their pants at the mention of the word socialism, even though socialism is the political system of choice for the majority of advanced nations in the world and Christianity is their religion of choice.
America itself has always operated on a blend of socialism and capitalism. Those things we create by pooling our tax dollars and then let the end user use them free of charge like public schools, libraries, parks, roads, bridges, fire and police protecton, etc. are socialistic. Bad things have been done in the name of Christianity and Socialism both. We need to eliminate the bad and educate ourselves about the good.
