A Brazilian football fan was killed on Friday after being struck in the head by a toilet bowl that was thrown from stadium stands by upset supporters during a match in eastern Brazil, according to Reuters.

Per Globoesporte (via Reuters), the incident occurred outside of Arruda Stadium in Recife on Friday after a 1-1 draw between Santa Cruz and Parana. According to police captain Wilson Queiroz, "In front of Gate 6 there was a big fight that resulted in the death of the fan. The toilet was thrown from the stands and hit him full on."

The victim, who the officer identified as Paulo Ricardo Gomes da Silva, was said to have been killed instantly. He was 26.

According to Globoesporte, there will be no more matches played at Arruda Stadium until the investigation into the fan's death is concluded.

Although there are still plenty of details to emerge and many questions still to be answered, there's no doubt this incident reflects poorly on Brazil's passionate football fans, especially with the nation set to host the 2014 World Cup in less than two months.

With four 2014 World Cup matches scheduled to be played in Recife (Arena Pernambuco) this summer, the disturbing incident no doubt raises concerns and questions regarding both player and fan safety.

But with a tremendous amount of spectators and reporters set to enter the country, and fans from every corner of the globe tuning in for the 2014 World Cup, there's sure to be an added security presence in Brazil this summer.
