I have created this thread to discuss Ayn Rand, her philosophy of Objectivism, and her views on Laissez Faire Capitalism. Unlike the opponents of Rand, I will attempt to offer direct quotes from her whenever possible.

Rand has written several books and essays, the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights has made numerous Rand television and radio appearences available, and the Ayn Rand Lexicon provides Rand quotes sorted by topic. All of which makes my job of explaining and correcting misinformation very easy.

I look forward to hearing from those who participate.

From another thread:

The woman venerated serial killers and rapists. Whereas Christianity's defining virtue is compassion (the golden rule--Do Not Do Unto Others What You Would Not Have Done Unto You), her defining virtue is egotism and selfishness (the iron rule--Do Unto Others Before They Do Unto You). The highest possible expression of human behavior, according to Ayn, is to fight and claw your way to power and wealth by any means necessary, and kick anyone on a rung below you in the face to knock them off completely. It's the old, "I've got mine, so **** the rest of you" philosophy, and it stinks.

No man is an island, unless he suffers a psychotic break with reality. Whatever success you enjoy today, you did not win all by yourself. You had the help of your parents, teachers, community members, and yes, even your government. To deny that any of those things affected or even helped you in some ways in your past is to spit in the face of every one of your family members and friends and claim glory for yourself which you don't deserve. It makes you not just an egotistical bore, but a dangerous sociopath...you know, a stand-up guy according to Rand.

That's if you accept every tenet of Ayn Rand's philosophies. And if you didn't, she would spit on you and kick you in the face herself. Ayn Rand is about free thinking only as long as you agree with her.

Sapphire, can you substantiate any of the claims you have made here about Rand and her philosophy?

India and much of Latin America run on Rand's theories. The terrible poverty is the consequence. Why would anyone want to follow such a model considering the terrible modern examples? Myself, I'm no fan of socialism, but Rand's views are way too extreme.

Aynal Rand Recruits Buttboys for the Bosses

The main scene in Atlas Shrugged exposes that her "individualism" is really a cult of personality glorifying selfish non-creative predators. John Galt should have gotten sole credit for the invention of that energy machine. If he had fit her manufactured hero-image, he would never have put up with the corporate parasites he worked for owning it instead. What's even worse, their heirs did. Freeloading moochers such as HeirHeads are as bad as the Socialists' pets. Basically, Objectivism is a mirror image of Stalinism: reversed from Left to Right, but just as ugly.

The thing I always found funny about Rand was the first principle of objectivism being Reality is an Absolute. That woman spent years and years denying reality and trying to replace it with her own reality.
