Nobody in Asia, or that matter anywhere, wants foreign bases on their land. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. Sometimes, a small section of the local population will heavily benefit from the bases.

However, I find it ironic that the same people in the US supporting the military wouldn't stand for foreign bases on their land. For instance, imagine the blood boiling when Chinese troops are marching thru Texas or Ohio. Well, we only have to watch the movie Red Dawn to get an idea of the comical situation.

The new Philippine Government does not want foreign bases. American bases only get the Philippines involve with wars with its neighbous. The USA pays no rent and does not guarantee to come to the Philippines defence if attacked

American bases in the Philippines were closed down decades ago and the Americans completely withdrew from their former colony. But due to the recent conflict with China over territorial waters in the South China Sea, the Philippines invited them back to open a naval base in order to scare the Chinese. The Filipinos are also 13% Spanish from their paternal side (hg R1b) as a legacy of Spanish colonial rule.

The Philippines profited mightily from those bases and Noone would attack BECAUSE of those bases. But we can be stupid in ignoring citizen concerns over unacceptable behavior of the military people against their host population. We do it everywhere and they all hate it. Some enough to walk away from all that money as the filippinos did.

They offered 8 bases, and the US is going to move into 5 of them:

You can thank the US corporations, and the politicians they have bought, for the threat China now poses.

This report was published before the new President Deture wa elected. He wants o make a treaty with China over fishing rights.

Dueterte was elected by a large majority several months ago. While some people may not like his killings he has the support of most Filipinos He wants to make a deal with Chin regardless of the USA, Philippines is in the region unlike the US. Australia is moving to a similar positon, peaceful deal with China.

China does not want peace. It wants control, and the US, nor Australia, will give them that. This is an old article, yet it seems we are ignoring the warning given just as we have done in similar cases in the past:

http://thediplomat.com/2011/07/why-china-wants-the-south-china-sea/

"This strategy dates back almost two decades, to a time when China began encircling the South China Sea to fill the power vacuum created by the withdrawal of US forces from the Philippines in 1991. China reasserted ‘historical’ claims over all the islets, including the Paracel and Spratly archipelagos, and 80 percent of the 3.5 million km2 body of water along the nine-dotted U-shaped line, despite having no international legal ground to do so. Those islets can be used as air and sea bases for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance activities, and as base points for claiming the deeper part of the South China Sea for PLAN ballistic missile submarines and other vessels. China also interprets the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in an arbitrary manner and doesn’t accept military activities by foreign vessels and overflight in its waters.

Yet China's efforts to dominate the South China Sea face significant challenges. Chinese assertiveness hasn’t only inflamed hostilities from other claimants, but has also raised concerns from seafaring nations such as the United States, Japan, Australia, and India. After all, the South China Sea is a recognized international waterway, unlike the Sea of Okhotsk. In addition, since the JL-2 missiles can’t reach Los Angeles from the South China Sea, Type 094 submarines need to enter the Philippine Sea, where the US Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force conduct intense anti-submarine warfare operations."

We plotted a coup to remove the Shaw of Iran who supported the US, and set in place the Ayatollah who supported Russia. And we know how well that worked.

Anyway, you could read this:

OLd trapper I afraid neither Australia or The Philippines will support the USA in its attempts to block China dominance in the Pacific. The USA is not the major power here and will do not war here. We need China's friendship and will negotiate with them
It was the USA interference in Iran that help the unrest in the Middle east. The USA stick to region closer and which they understand.

Recently the Filipino president has forced the US troops out. However, this thing, which is viewed as a gain by certain people, might be short. For instance, if another less radical president comes in, then he could vote the troops back in. However, France, another nation which did a similar action, has never seen US troops return.

Have you ever noticed that China does not make friends easily, they only seek to dominate? I agree that the US should not interfere in foreign matters, however, if China were to dominate the South China Sea, which it intends to do, you will find yourself being a satellite nation of China as will Vietnam, Taiwan, etc. Will you then ask for American help? I know Australia will.

Old Trapper I know that China dose not make friends easy. But they do have trade treaties with Australia and some Asian countries. They can negotiate with anyone. I doubt they want to make satellites . They do the Philippines for given them some control of trade in south China sea. They use Australia for education and tourism as well as trade.

If we are invaded I doubt if the USA will come in time to save us as they did not to too late in WW2.

Have they ever entered into a trade agreement that they have kept? The trade agreement the US made with them has not benefited the US worker, or consumer.

Australia has had several trade deals with china. They have been to the benefit of both countries. We buy their manufacture good but sell cattle , minerals and services to them. Both countries have grown their GDP and Australian wages have not fallen.
