UK still a world power?

As for the IRA taking control of Northern Ireland. Isn't that for the people of that country to decide, not for a terrorist organization? The people of Northern Ireland wanted to stay under British rule so what would give the IRA the right to just come along and take it?

Yes the people that the British Bribed with favor for hundreds of years....why reward them for taking a minority of a nation and giving them the power? Hey you did a good job paying there Irish off so you can have part of the country? Also many in the North did not want to stay under British Rule....but they had no say in the matter.
Also you say terrorist group, But terrorist is always what nations call groups who fight back for their own freedom...just like in the US...we where all terrorist for fighting the crown. Until we won.

The UK's status as a world power ended after WW2 but what has kept the UK relevant in world affairs is their partnership with the U.S. Since it's unlikely this relationship will be changed by anything Britain can still keep the false appearance of being world power even though it's not.

And it does still have the 5th wealthiest economy in the world aswell as seeming to be able to bring the whole EU into a state of panic because it's threatened to withdraw.

Not bad for a country that's not had any influence whatsoever on the world for apparently the last 72 years.

The only super powers of the future are the US and China.

And maybe the European Union, if they get their act together. If. Not highly likely, but desirable.

Did I mention small countries like the UK, France or Germany? Forget it. A super power needs resources and a minimum area.
India might soon be added to that list.

Britain is also powerful because of the Commonwealth. But Australian political leaders want a republic.

I think that the UK still has clout and authority because of its historical legacy. That clout and authority, however, is shifting as our world gets more and more complex.

I think your right and the world is getting more complex, and when people talk about the UK having the commonwealth, I'm not sure if that means a great deal to anybody any more if I'm being honest.

Let's see how much the UK does actually matter to the EU, and see how hard it tries to keep the UK from leaving, as and when this referendum takes place, and the UK people state they want to come out.

I think the UK link with the Commonwealth is still important> There are many countries in the British Commonwealth in most continents. This includes India. We still meet at Commonwealth conference and at the Commonwealth Games. This link will keep the UK among the top nations of the world.

If the UK leaves the EU, I think the commonwealth will once again be important to Great Britain and even though in recent years we seem to have been trying to distance ourselves from it, I can see us from now on trying to strengthen that union again.

Britain in my opinion ceased to be a world power quite some time ago. Otherwise, why does Britain jump into the American bandwagon every time there is a major world crisis like the Iraq war. Being a world power has as much to do with perception as reality. The phenomenal rise of China has overshadowed the impact of hitherto world powers.
