Is multiculturalism a thing of the past?

When I lived in London (UK) when you read about an area, the multiculturalism was an attraction, indicating diverse and ethnic shops and eateries, but now that is no longer the case.

People seem to steer clear of different cultures due to terrorism and also the unknown. Before people would settle in and integrate, but it seems cultures are not blending how they did before, but are staying separate. This isn't good for society and racism rears its ugly head and discrimination occurs.

How did it all go so wrong?

I've just mentioned on another thread about multiculturalism and I'm not sure it ever worked. I think it's a nice idea, but that's all its ever been.

I live in the UK now, and you don't get streets with mixed races on there, all living together. You get a town with Muslims in one part, polish in another...nobody wants to mix with the English people so how can that be a multicultural society?

That's kind of the definition. You can walk or drive a few blocks for your German brats your paella your borscht but they don't need to be on the same block.
Mainly you want them to speak the language embrace the lifestyle and embrace that's it's different than the old place and better.

I thought multiculturalism in London was working well, where I spent many summers as a student. Londoners tend to be more culturally tolerant compared to other UK cities perhaps due to their higher income/education levels and you could hardly come across the vile racist type pretty common in Australia. I think the British get a bad rap for being empire builders but they managed to get racism under control in their country.

If someone immigrate to London chances are they have money. It's not cheap to live there. If they were well to do at the old place chances are they are well mannered. It's easy to get along with people similar to you.

A few decades ago multiculturalism was a positive thing and other cultures did blend in together, at least in the UK. People would like to try new foods and look at the Notting Hill Carnival, that was based on multiculturalism.

The shift changed when migrants from Eastern Europe came to the UK and 'took over', they had no wish to blend in, but wanted to make money and create their own community and use the welfare benefits their own countries did not have or could afford. This caused resentment and thus the divide occurred.

In addition there were more asylum seekers who were given social housing over citizens who needed it, so there bred more resentment as these people did not wish to learn English or get jobs, yet the tax payers paid for the roof over their head and food in their stomachs. That's how multiculturalism died. My parents are immigrants and blended into the UK, but that was back int he 1960s. Things are different now.

Things are very different now, especially in the north of England where I'm from, and in most northern town's now, there are no go areas for white people. Muslim communities don't welcome white people into their areas anymore and there is a definite divide that's only getting wider.

When immigration ceased to be earned.
Back in the day people coming to b America wanted to come here because of who we were and wanted into the melting pot. Now they juse want the goodies.

What part of “if you reward a behavior you will get more of it” don’t the leaders of Western Europe and Obama understand? Why would it surprise anyone that this “migration” is surpassing all previous ones? Previous ones (except for “guest worker” programs) mostly involved bona fide refugees from the horrors of war, rather than welfare-country window shoppers. There are definitely some of the former here, fleeing the horrors. But what percentage of those are coming, compared to what percentage of the opportunistic window-shoppers?

Finland—it’s too cold and boring, say the “migrants,” who are leaving Finland for more temperate climes—lets you know what’s going on.

We not only have a multiculturalism problem but a very serious Sovereinty problem as well

And the fact that the leaders of the Eastern European countries are not allowed by the EU to say “no” is chilling. This isn’t just an issue that involves sovereignty; this is at the very heart of sovereignty.

And largely overlooked. Just how wide is the net making this muslim invasion ?
Need to find the money to follow.

There are around 800,000 Polish immigrants in the UK now and they are as numerous as British Indians who mostly arrived in the 1950s. The number of Polish immigrants would exceed 1 million in five years or so, which is why UKIP is popular. But we cannot blame them for creating their own communities in the UK, making up 10% of the population of some British cities, because that's how every immigrant group settled in the UK, seeking a comfort zone for themselves by living close to their relatives. In my view, the shift occurred when the Tories took over the government in 2009 and Home Secretary Theresa May has been promoting anti-immigration policies since 2010.

Integration and assimilation seems to work well when the numbers are relatively small as you have indicated. The more tribal nature that pops up when there are many of a given culture within another does not work well from what I can see. Over time, the younger generations might integrate better but not in most cases if what we see of black and native reserves and ghettos are an indicator as those groups have had many generations to assimilate or integrate but have not done so.

I am not placing blame only on the new group here as the old and larger group ends in discriminating against the new group as well.

It is possible that integration and assimilation of larger groups is impossible.

We do not really have an example of where two large groups have co-existed without fighting.

Islam's ideology in particular is impossible for us to tolerate as they do not tolerate ours.

When some on this side of the Atlantic try to say that there are no go zones, people always throw that Fox news error around and will not believe that there are no go zones being created as we speak.

I think the people in such places should be given the choice of joining the greater society or getting the hell out to where they might be more comfortable with their own instead of screwing up their adopted land.

A hard line, no doubt but I see no other way to bring peace back to some areas.

No argument except for your last.

All the countries of the EU are doing their own thing according to the complaints from some of those countries. For instance, some will only accept Christians.

I don't think I can blame them because of social considerations as well as the costs of re-establishing immigrants is high and some of the EU countries just can't afford it.

Take Greece and Spain who are near bankrupt. Who can blame them for rejecting more debt or costs.
